Description

Tender sliced beef, sweet caramelized onions, and melted provolone tucked into toasted hoagie rolls for a hearty sandwich that is comforting, savory, and easy enough for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound thinly sliced beef sirloin or shaved beef
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hoagie rolls, split
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven or toaster oven to 375°F and set a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. In a small bowl, stir together the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Gently separate the sliced beef and set aside.
  3. Add the olive oil and butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the sliced onions and a pinch of the remaining salt. Cook for 18 to 22 minutes, stirring often, until soft and deeply golden.
  4. Move the onions to one side of the skillet or transfer to a plate. Increase the heat to medium-high, add the beef, and cook for 2 to 4 minutes until just browned.
  5. Pour in the seasoning mixture, toss the beef, then return the onions to the skillet and stir everything together until glossy and well combined.
  6. Place the split hoagie rolls on a baking sheet and toast for 3 to 4 minutes until lightly crisp inside.
  7. Divide the beef and onion mixture among the rolls, top with provolone cheese, and return to the oven for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese melts.
  8. Spread mayonnaise inside the rolls if using, sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Cook the onions slowly for the best sweetness and texture.
  • Do not overcook the beef, since thin slices can become tough quickly.
  • Toast the rolls lightly so they hold up better against the juicy filling.
  • The onion mixture can be made ahead and refrigerated to save time.
