Description
Tender sliced beef, sweet caramelized onions, and melted provolone tucked into toasted hoagie rolls for a hearty sandwich that is comforting, savory, and easy enough for a weeknight meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound thinly sliced beef sirloin or shaved beef
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 teaspoon salt, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls, split
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven or toaster oven to 375°F and set a large skillet over medium heat.
- In a small bowl, stir together the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper. Gently separate the sliced beef and set aside.
- Add the olive oil and butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the sliced onions and a pinch of the remaining salt. Cook for 18 to 22 minutes, stirring often, until soft and deeply golden.
- Move the onions to one side of the skillet or transfer to a plate. Increase the heat to medium-high, add the beef, and cook for 2 to 4 minutes until just browned.
- Pour in the seasoning mixture, toss the beef, then return the onions to the skillet and stir everything together until glossy and well combined.
- Place the split hoagie rolls on a baking sheet and toast for 3 to 4 minutes until lightly crisp inside.
- Divide the beef and onion mixture among the rolls, top with provolone cheese, and return to the oven for 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese melts.
- Spread mayonnaise inside the rolls if using, sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired, and serve hot.
Notes
- Cook the onions slowly for the best sweetness and texture.
- Do not overcook the beef, since thin slices can become tough quickly.
- Toast the rolls lightly so they hold up better against the juicy filling.
- The onion mixture can be made ahead and refrigerated to save time.
