Description

One of THE VERY BEST Salisbury Steak recipes features tender, flavorful beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy, perfect for a comforting classic meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until combined.
  2. Shape mixture into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove patties and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms until tender, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually add beef broth while stirring, then add ketchup and Dijon mustard. Cook until sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  7. Return patties to skillet, spoon sauce over them, cover, and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.

Notes

  • Use fresh mushrooms for best flavor.
  • Do not overmix the meat mixture to keep patties tender.
  • Adjust seasoning in the gravy to taste.
