Description

Tennessee Onions are a simple yet irresistibly cheesy side dish made with sweet onions layered with a blend of cheeses, butter, and seasonings, then baked until bubbling and golden. Perfect for BBQs, potlucks, or a comforting Southern-inspired side.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 large sweet onions (like Vidalia), sliced into 1/4-inch rings
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread the sliced onions evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Drizzle the melted butter over the onions and season with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika (if using), salt, and pepper.
  4. Sprinkle all three cheeses evenly over the onions.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is golden and bubbly and onions are tender.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use sweet onions for the best flavor and texture.
  • Try adding crispy bacon bits or breadcrumbs on top before baking for extra texture.
  • Great as a side for grilled meats or holiday dinners.
