Description

Southern Hamburger and Potato Casserole is a comforting, hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef layered with tender potatoes and a creamy cheese sauce, baked to golden perfection. It’s a classic soul food favorite that’s easy to make and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and garlic; sauté until soft.
  3. Add ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and paprika, cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. In a bowl, mix condensed cream of mushroom soup with milk.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
  6. Spread half of the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes.
  7. Pour half of the soup mixture over the beef and potatoes.
  8. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
  9. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, soup mixture, and cheese.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.
  11. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, add a dollop of sour cream before baking.
  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for a buttery flavor and better texture.
  • Add chopped green peppers or mushrooms for extra vegetables.
