Description

Smoky Caramelized Onion Dip is a rich and flavorful dip featuring sweet caramelized onions with a hint of smokiness. Creamy sour cream and mayonnaise combined with Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce make this the perfect companion for potato chips or fresh veggies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons (28 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 pound (450 g) yellow onions, diced (about 45 onions)
  • ½ teaspoon fine salt, divided
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup (240 ml) full-fat sour cream
  • ¼ cup (63 g) mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons (10 g) Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • For serving: 8 ounces potato chips
  • 2 tablespoons sliced fresh chives or chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat until melted.
  2. Add diced onions and ¼ teaspoon salt, cook slowly for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown.
  3. Stir in remaining ¼ teaspoon salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Fold the caramelized onions into the creamy mixture until evenly combined.
  6. Transfer dip to a serving bowl and garnish with fresh chives or parsley.
  7. Serve with potato chips or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • Caramelizing onions slowly over low heat enhances their natural sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Dip can be made a few hours in advance and refrigerated to let flavors meld.
  • Use a mix of yellow and sweet onions for added complexity.
  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked chili powder.
