Description

Classic Scalloped Potatoes are thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce until tender and golden brown, making for a comforting and delicious side dish.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in half of the cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  7. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  8. Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs over the top if using.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are tender and the top is golden.
  11. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add sautéed onions between layers.
  • Use heavy cream instead of milk for a richer sauce.
  • Add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for a fragrant touch.
