Classic Scalloped Potatoes are thinly sliced potatoes baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce until tender and golden brown, making for a comforting and delicious side dish.

- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (about 4 medium potatoes)
- 3 tbsp butter
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly.
- Gradually whisk in milk and cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
- Remove from heat and stir in half of the cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish.
- Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
- Repeat layers with remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
- Sprinkle remaining cheddar cheese and breadcrumbs over the top if using.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are tender and the top is golden.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add sautéed onions between layers.
- Use heavy cream instead of milk for a richer sauce.
- Add fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary for a fragrant touch.
