- 1 lb breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking pan.
- In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks, until browned and crumbled. Drain excess fat.
- Add flour to the sausage and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a roux.
- Gradually add milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until the gravy thickens. Season with black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Roll out the puff pastry and fit it into the prepared pie dish, pressing the edges to fit the dish.
- Pour the sausage gravy into the puff pastry shell, spreading it evenly.
- Cut a small circle or design in the center of the remaining puff pastry sheet and place it over the pie to cover the filling.
- Brush the top of the pastry with a beaten egg for a golden finish.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
- Let it cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Feel free to add shredded cheese to the gravy for extra richness.
- For a spicier version, add crushed red pepper flakes to the gravy.
- This dish can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
