Description

Sausage Gravy Puff Pie is a savory breakfast dish made with flaky puff pastry filled with rich, creamy sausage gravy, perfect for a hearty and comforting meal.


Ingredients

  • 1 lb breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or baking pan.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks, until browned and crumbled. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add flour to the sausage and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a roux.
  4. Gradually add milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until the gravy thickens. Season with black pepper, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry and fit it into the prepared pie dish, pressing the edges to fit the dish.
  6. Pour the sausage gravy into the puff pastry shell, spreading it evenly.
  7. Cut a small circle or design in the center of the remaining puff pastry sheet and place it over the pie to cover the filling.
  8. Brush the top of the pastry with a beaten egg for a golden finish.
  9. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  10. Let it cool for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Feel free to add shredded cheese to the gravy for extra richness.
  • For a spicier version, add crushed red pepper flakes to the gravy.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
