Description

Salisbury steak meatballs are juicy, flavorful beef meatballs simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy — a comforting twist on a classic diner favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides, about 5–6 minutes (they don’t need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced onion and mushrooms. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
  5. Stir in beef broth, ketchup, and mustard. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Return meatballs to the skillet, cover, and cook for 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
  7. Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook uncovered for another 2–3 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef for less grease in the gravy.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of cream or a pat of butter to the finished gravy.
  • These meatballs freeze well—store in sauce in an airtight container.
