Description
Salisbury steak meatballs are juicy, flavorful beef meatballs simmered in a rich onion and mushroom gravy — a comforting twist on a classic diner favorite.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
- 1 small onion, sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Form into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides, about 5–6 minutes (they don’t need to be fully cooked). Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add sliced onion and mushrooms. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
- Stir in beef broth, ketchup, and mustard. Bring to a simmer.
- Return meatballs to the skillet, cover, and cook for 10–12 minutes until cooked through.
- Stir in cornstarch slurry and cook uncovered for another 2–3 minutes until the gravy thickens.
- Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef for less grease in the gravy.
- For extra richness, add a splash of cream or a pat of butter to the finished gravy.
- These meatballs freeze well—store in sauce in an airtight container.
