For the Bloomin’ Sauce:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Pinch cayenne pepper
For the Onions:
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, horseradish, garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and cayenne. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
- Prepare the Onion: Cut the onion into large petals or wedges, separating the layers.
- Mix Dry Coating: In a shallow dish, whisk together flour, seasoned salt, black pepper, garlic powder, cayenne, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
- Mix Wet Coating: In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
- Coat the Onions: Dip each onion petal into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and back into the flour mixture. Press lightly so the coating sticks well.
- Heat the Oil: In a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry: Fry the onion petals in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per batch. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Serve: Enjoy hot with the prepared Bloomin’ Sauce.
Notes
- For extra crispy petals, double-dip the onions in flour before frying.
- Make sure the oil temperature stays around 350°F for even cooking.
- Best served immediately while hot and crunchy.
