Description

These crispy Onion Petals are golden, crunchy, and perfect for dipping in a zesty homemade Bloomin’ Sauce. Inspired by the classic steakhouse appetizer, they’re fun to make at home and guaranteed to disappear fast!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bloomin’ Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Pinch cayenne pepper

For the Onions:

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, sour cream, ketchup, horseradish, garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and cayenne. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  2. Prepare the Onion: Cut the onion into large petals or wedges, separating the layers.
  3. Mix Dry Coating: In a shallow dish, whisk together flour, seasoned salt, black pepper, garlic powder, cayenne, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
  4. Mix Wet Coating: In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  5. Coat the Onions: Dip each onion petal into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and back into the flour mixture. Press lightly so the coating sticks well.
  6. Heat the Oil: In a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Fry: Fry the onion petals in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2–3 minutes per batch. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
  8. Serve: Enjoy hot with the prepared Bloomin’ Sauce.

Notes

  • For extra crispy petals, double-dip the onions in flour before frying.
  • Make sure the oil temperature stays around 350°F for even cooking.
  • Best served immediately while hot and crunchy.
