Description
Soft, buttery cookies rolled with a sweet walnut filling, Italian Nut Roll Cookies are a nostalgic and cozy treat perfect for holidays or everyday indulgence.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter (cold)
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups ground walnuts
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add sour cream and vanilla extract, then mix until a soft dough forms. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
- Prepare the filling by combining ground walnuts and brown sugar in a separate bowl.
- Divide the chilled dough into three equal parts. Roll each into a rectangle on a floured surface.
- Spread the walnut filling evenly over each rectangle and roll tightly into logs.
- Place rolls seam-side down on the baking sheet. Whisk the egg and milk together and brush over the rolls.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool completely before slicing into ½-inch cookies.
- Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve.
Notes
- Chilling the dough helps it roll out more easily and prevents sticking.
- Do not overfill the rolls to avoid leaking during baking.
- Let the rolls cool completely for clean slicing.
