- 500 grams ground beef
- 2 medium yellow onions, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 200 ml beef broth
- 1 kg potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 60 grams butter
- 100 ml milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 100 grams grated Gruyère or Emmental cheese
- 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- In a skillet, sauté onions in butter until golden. Add garlic and cook briefly. Stir in ground beef and brown thoroughly.
- Add tomato paste and beef broth, simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
- Boil potatoes until tender. Drain and mash with butter, warm milk, nutmeg, salt, and pepper until smooth.
- Spread the meat mixture in a greased baking dish. Layer mashed potatoes on top, smoothing the surface.
- Sprinkle with grated cheese and breadcrumbs if using.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.
- Let rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use warm milk and butter for creamier mashed potatoes.
- Leftovers can be frozen in individual portions for later.
- Add sautéed vegetables like carrots or mushrooms for extra flavor.
- To make ahead, assemble and refrigerate up to 2 days before baking.
