Description

Greek Yogurt Onion Dip with Crispy Shallots is a creamy, tangy dip made with caramelized onions and thick Greek yogurt, topped with golden, crispy shallots for added crunch and flavor. It’s a lighter twist on the classic onion dip, perfect for parties or healthy snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar (optional, to enhance caramelization)
  • 1 1/2 cups plain full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For crispy shallots:
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup neutral oil (like canola or vegetable)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil and butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion, salt, and sugar. Cook, stirring often, until deeply golden and caramelized, about 25–30 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  2. In a bowl, mix Greek yogurt, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Stir in the cooled caramelized onions. Chill for at least 30 minutes for flavors to meld.
  3. To make crispy shallots: Heat oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add sliced shallots and cook, stirring frequently, until golden brown and crisp, 6–8 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Season with a pinch of salt.
  4. Top the dip with crispy shallots before serving. Serve with chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.

Notes

  • Make the dip a day ahead for even deeper flavor.
  • Try adding chopped chives or fresh thyme for an herby twist.
  • Use dairy-free yogurt for a vegan version.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
