Description
A rich, creamy dip infused with the deep, sweet flavor of caramelized onions, elevated with garlic, chives, and a luscious blend of sour cream and cream cheese.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup sour cream
- 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons fresh chives, finely chopped
Instructions
- Place a large skillet over medium-low heat and allow it to warm up for a couple of minutes.
- Add the butter and olive oil to the pan. Once melted, stir in the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring often, for 30 to 40 minutes until deeply golden and soft. Add the minced garlic during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
- Transfer the caramelized onions to a bowl and let them cool to room temperature.
- In a separate mixing bowl, combine sour cream, softened cream cheese, and mayonnaise until smooth.
- Fold in the cooled onion-garlic mixture, black pepper, and most of the chopped chives. Stir gently until fully blended.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Garnish with the remaining chives.
- Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve with chips, bread, or veggies.
Notes
- Letting the dip chill enhances the flavor and texture.
- Caramelize the onions slowly for best results. Rushing will burn them.
- You can prepare the dip a day ahead and store in the fridge.
- Use full-fat dairy products for the creamiest finish.
