Description

Soft, baked vanilla cake donuts packed with rainbow sprinkles and finished with a smooth vanilla glaze for a cheerful homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/3 cup rainbow sprinkles
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons whole milk, for the glaze
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, for the glaze
  • 2 tablespoons rainbow sprinkles, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 12-cavity donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the 3/4 cup whole milk, sour cream, egg, melted butter, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, and almond extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. Fold in the 1/3 cup rainbow sprinkles.
  5. Transfer the batter to a piping bag or zip-top bag with one corner snipped off. Pipe the batter into the donut cavities, filling each about two-thirds full.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the tops spring back lightly and the edges are just golden.
  7. Cool the donuts in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Whisk together the powdered sugar, 3 tablespoons whole milk, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for the glaze until smooth.
  9. Dip the cooled donuts into the glaze, let the excess drip off, and top with the remaining 2 tablespoons rainbow sprinkles.
  10. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use jimmies-style sprinkles for the best color and texture in the batter.
  • Do not overmix the batter or the donuts may turn out dense.
  • Let the donuts cool fully before glazing so the topping sets nicely.
  • Unglazed donuts can be frozen for up to 2 months.
