Description

Egyptian Goulash is a savory layered pastry dish featuring crispy phyllo dough filled with a spiced ground beef mixture. Baked until golden and fragrant, it’s a popular comfort food perfect for family meals or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 package phyllo dough (about 16 sheets), thawed
  • 1/2 cup melted butter or ghee
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté onions and garlic until soft.
  3. Add ground beef, cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in cinnamon, allspice, black pepper, salt, tomato paste, and water. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in chopped parsley. Let cool slightly.
  6. Brush the baking dish with melted butter. Layer 6 sheets of phyllo, brushing each sheet with butter before adding the next.
  7. Spread the meat mixture evenly over the phyllo layers.
  8. Layer remaining phyllo sheets on top, brushing each with butter.
  9. Score the top layers into squares or diamonds for easy cutting after baking.
  10. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the phyllo is golden and crispy.
  11. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Keep phyllo dough covered with a damp towel to prevent drying while assembling.
  • For a richer flavor, use ghee instead of butter.
  • Serve with a side of yogurt or salad.
