Description

A hearty one-pan meal inspired by the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak. This easy homemade version of Hamburger Helper features ground beef, sautéed peppers and onions, pasta, and a creamy cheesy sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for extra richness)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper; cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Push vegetables to the side and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Drain excess grease if needed. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Add beef broth, milk, and macaroni. Stir well and bring to a boil.
  5. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes, or until pasta is cooked and liquid is mostly absorbed. Stir occasionally.
  6. Turn off heat and stir in the shredded cheese until melted and creamy. Adjust seasoning if needed.
  7. Let sit for a few minutes to thicken, then serve hot.

Notes

  • Use any short pasta if elbow macaroni is unavailable.
  • Add mushrooms for an extra Philly-style touch.
  • For a spicier kick, add red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
