Description
A hearty one-pan meal inspired by the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak. This easy homemade version of Hamburger Helper features ground beef, sautéed peppers and onions, pasta, and a creamy cheesy sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 1/2 cups shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional for extra richness)
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper; cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. Push vegetables to the side and add ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Drain excess grease if needed. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Add beef broth, milk, and macaroni. Stir well and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes, or until pasta is cooked and liquid is mostly absorbed. Stir occasionally.
- Turn off heat and stir in the shredded cheese until melted and creamy. Adjust seasoning if needed.
- Let sit for a few minutes to thicken, then serve hot.
Notes
- Use any short pasta if elbow macaroni is unavailable.
- Add mushrooms for an extra Philly-style touch.
- For a spicier kick, add red pepper flakes or hot sauce.
