Description

These golden Cheese and Onion Pasties are a comforting classic with a flaky puff pastry shell and a hearty filling of potatoes, caramelized onions, and sharp cheddar cheese. Perfect as a snack, lunch, or picnic favorite, they’re simple, savory, and utterly satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 400 g (1 lb) potatoes, peeled and cut into small cubes
  • 30 g (1 oz) salted butter
  • 2 large onions, peeled and finely chopped
  • 125 g (4.5 oz) strong cheddar cheese, grated
  • 375 g (12 oz) puff pastry
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Boil the potatoes in salted water for 8–10 minutes, until just tender. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a skillet, melt the butter and cook the onions gently until soft and golden, about 10 minutes.
  4. In a bowl, combine the cooked potatoes, onions, and grated cheddar. Season generously with salt and black pepper.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry and cut into 6–8 equal squares or circles. Spoon filling onto one half, fold over, and seal edges with a fork.
  6. Transfer pasties to the baking sheet, brush tops with milk or egg wash if desired.
  7. Bake for 20–25 minutes until puffed and golden brown. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can add a pinch of dried thyme or mustard powder to the filling for extra flavor.
  • These pasties taste great hot from the oven or at room temperature.
  • They can be frozen before baking—just bake from frozen, adding 5–10 minutes to the cooking time.
