Description

A cozy and comforting baked breakfast dish made with cubed French bread, a creamy custard, and sweet blueberries. Perfect for brunch, holidays, or lazy weekends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread (about 14 oz), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1½ cups fresh blueberries
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.
  3. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  4. Layer cubed bread and blueberries in the dish.
  5. Pour custard evenly over the bread and berries. Press gently to soak.
  6. Cover and refrigerate overnight, or at least for 2 hours.
  7. Uncover and bake for 45–50 minutes until golden and set in the center.
  8. Let rest for 10 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar.
  9. Serve warm with optional maple syrup.

Notes

  • Use day-old bread for best texture.
  • If top browns too fast, cover loosely with foil halfway through baking.
  • Add lemon zest for a citrus twist or mix in other berries for variety.
