- 4 cups fresh blackberries
- 1 cup sugar (divided)
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, water, and 3/4 cup sugar. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in milk and melted butter until just combined to form a thick batter.
- Drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering blackberry mixture. Do not stir.
- Cover the pot tightly and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15–20 minutes without lifting the lid.
- Once dumplings are puffed and cooked through, remove lid and gently stir the syrup around the edges.
- Serve warm with plenty of berry syrup and optional toppings like whipped cream or ice cream.
Notes
- Do not lift the lid while simmering to ensure fluffy dumplings.
- Frozen blackberries can be used in place of fresh ones.
- Add a pinch of cinnamon or lemon zest to the dough for extra flavor.
