Description

Soft, fluffy dumplings simmered in a rich, sweet blackberry syrup — this comforting dessert is simple, nostalgic, and full of summer flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup sugar (divided)
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, water, and 3/4 cup sugar. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Stir in milk and melted butter until just combined to form a thick batter.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering blackberry mixture. Do not stir.
  5. Cover the pot tightly and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15–20 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Once dumplings are puffed and cooked through, remove lid and gently stir the syrup around the edges.
  7. Serve warm with plenty of berry syrup and optional toppings like whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes

  • Do not lift the lid while simmering to ensure fluffy dumplings.
  • Frozen blackberries can be used in place of fresh ones.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or lemon zest to the dough for extra flavor.
