Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp soy sauce (low-sodium)
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1/2 cup shredded carrots
- 1/2 cup chopped water chestnuts (optional)
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 head butter lettuce or romaine, leaves separated and washed
- Chopped cilantro and sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- Heat sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic and onion and sauté for 2–3 minutes until softened.
- Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, ginger, and red pepper flakes. Cook for another 3–4 minutes until the sauce reduces slightly.
- Add shredded carrots, water chestnuts, and green onions. Stir to combine and cook for 1–2 more minutes.
- Remove from heat and spoon the beef mixture into lettuce leaves.
- Garnish with cilantro and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or tofu for a lighter or vegetarian version.
- Double the sauce ingredients if you prefer a juicier filling.
- Serve with a drizzle of sriracha or chili garlic sauce for added heat.
