- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

- 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 1 ½ cups brown sugar (packed)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 cups peeled and chopped apples
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- In another large bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well. Stir in vanilla.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture. Fold in chopped apples tossed in lemon juice.
- Divide batter evenly between pans. Smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
- Beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and cream to make frosting.
- Frost cooled layers, then top and sides of cake. Slice and serve at room temperature.
